The Smartest Way To Fight Post-Lockdown Flab

The Smartest Way To Fight Post-Lockdown Flab

Aesthetic body treatments can be a godsend, a shortcut to help you achieve your #BodyGoals. Generally, these treatments use high tech machines to encourage the body to eliminate fats or to stimulate the burning of fats or building of muscle, helping you to slim, contour and firm up problem areas.

However, if you have tried such body treatments but haven’t achieved the results you desire, perhaps a more 360 approach is needed.

The fact is that no one single type of treatment can help you do it all. Just as you cannot expect to attain your dream physic just by doing one single type of exercise, say weight training, without doing anything else.

Here’s where our specially designed, holistic Trifecta Body Shaping Program comes in. It integrates three different FDA-approved body treatments for the most effective spot treatment to help you achieve your body goals.

Calvin Chan Aesthetics Trifecta Body Shaping Program

Calvin Chan Trifecta body program

Why our Trifecta Body Shaping Program works:

Instead of working on a one-track basis with a single type of treatment, our Trifecta program incorporates 3 different methods that work synergistically:

  1. SLIM i-LIPO to break down fat cells;
  2. EMSCULPT to build muscle to burn the fat, and;
  3. EXILIS ULTRA 360 to tighten and tone the skin.

Works Best on:

Flabby Tummy, Thunder Thighs, Bat Wing Arms. Basically pockets of stubborn fat with underlying muscles that are resistant to diet and exercise.

A highly customised program:

The exact combination of these 3 body treatments in our Trifecta Body Shaping Program is determined by our therapists after an in-depth consultation and analysis of the problem area. Each program is customised for the individual to achieve optimal body shaping results.

MORE ABOUT THE 3 TREATMENTS IN THE PROGRAM:

#1. SLIM i-LIPO — TO BREAK DOWN FAT CELLS

i-lipo calvin chan trifecta body treatment

What it is: Slim i-Lipo is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that targets stubborn fatty deposits, enhances lymphatic drainage and improves blood circulation.

How it works: Using treatment pads that emit infrared laser energy, fat cells are broken down into free fatty acids and glycerol. These are then released through the cell membranes and are transported through the body to be “burned off” during exercise. This makes i-Lipo a great compliment to the next treatment, EMSCULPT, which mimics intensive exercising.

#2. EMSCULPT — TO BUILD MUSCLE & BURN FAT

Emsuclpt calvin chan body trifecta program

What it is: EMSCULPT is a treatment that induces the treated area to build muscle and burn fat through intensive muscle contractions. It can mimic up to 20,000 muscle contractions in a 30-minute session.

How it works: Using non-invasive HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology that induces supramaximal muscle contractions, the treated muscle tissue is forced to adapt to the extreme contractions by remodeling its inner structure, resulting in effective muscle building and fat burning. You will feel your muscles contracting and squeezing, but you won’t be exerting any effort.

#3. EXILIS ULTRA 360 — TO TIGHTEN & TONE THE SKIN

xilis ultra 360 calvin chan aesthetics body trifecta program

What it is: Exilis Ultra is a non-invasive skin tightening and fat-reduction treatment designed to address skin laxity and reduce pockets of unwanted fat.

How it works: By delivering radiofrequency and ultrasound energy waves as heat that heat the skin layers causing it to contract and tighten, Exilis Ultra safely destroys fat cells, firms skin, and triggers collagen production.

Lockdown Beauty: The New Ways To Keep Your Skin Healthy Now

Lockdown Beauty: The New Ways To Keep Your Skin Healthy Now

These days, your skin isn’t subjected to outdoor pollution or daily makeup-wearing, so why are breakouts and bad skin becoming a common complaint? We point out some possible culprits and tell you what to do to get great skin.

Here’s the new skincare knowledge you need right now to help you deal with lockdown skin. Yes, despite the fact that we are subjecting your skin to less stressors and detrimental factors like outdoor pollution, UV radiation and the daily wearing of makeup, breakouts and bad skin are happening.

And it’s not just you. It is a common complaint around the world, as the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing everyone to stay home and stay safe. But hey, count yourself lucky if you get to work from home, because there are those who cannot… And let’s get down to the solutions for your skin, pronto!

Lockdown Breakouts & Bad Skin

Breakouts flare up because of 3 main reasons: Stress, poor diet and lack of hygiene.

lockdown beauty cleanse skin

Cause #1: Stress

Understandably, we are all under added stress as our daily lives change and when there’s stress there is a jump in our bodies’ cortisol levels. This wrecks havoc with hormones that control skin’s sebaceous glands and we end up with oilier skin, clogged pores and new zits.

The solution: Start with an effective cleanser to effectively get rid of excess oil like our Deep Cleanse (shop here), with astringent, pore-tightening and moisturising properties to normalise sebaceous glands for clear, blemish-free skin. Follow with suitable skincare steps for your skin. Also, keep calm, and keep your stress in check.

stress lockdown beauty skin problems

Cause #2: Poor diet

There’s been many jokes and memes going around about overeating and getting fat during the lockdown because what else do you do when you’re at home almost 24/7 for weeks on end? Yep, you tend to snack much more (and probably exercise much less too). Eating poorly and overindulging could be the culprit that’s causing skin problems because this could upset your gut and digestive system, which in turn can wreak havoc on your skin. This could mean breakouts, heightened skin irritation and sensitivity and depleted moisture levels.

The solution: Try to eat healthier and include probiotics in your diet to balance your gut. Treat skin with extra TLC by cleansing well in the morning and at night before bed, yes even if you don’t put makeup on and go out, you still should keep to this regimen. Soothe and treat skin with our Purifying Booster (shop here), an ampoule that refreshes and renews skin with this soothing, anti-inflammatory, healing benefits. It also strengthens skin, stimulates cell renewal and shrinks pores. Apply after cleansing and toning skin day and night. A good non-comedogenic moisturiser is a must also, try our Quench (shop here), a natural, plant-based lightweight moisturiser that contains amino acids and enzymes to provide hydration to the skin, keep it moist and lock in the moisture, leaving you brighter, supple and dewy skin all day.

Cause #3: Lack of hygiene You’re in the confines of your home almost 24/7 these days, but are you cleaning more? More lying in bed means you need to change the sheets more often. More eating, snacking and drinking around the house means you need to pull out the vacuum more often to eliminate crumbs and debris and working from home means you need wipe down high touch surfaces frequently; All these to prevent the spread of germs that can cause breakouts and skin problems when you touch your face. The solution: Step up your household cleaning and avoid touching your face. Cleanse well every morning and night and add on our Clarify (shop here), a skincare lotion that treats acne-inflamed skin by eliminating dirt, excess oil and dead cells and soothing the inflamation.

10 Facts You Need To Know About Skincare Masks
Apr 27, 2020

10 Facts You Need To Know About Skincare Masks

When it comes to taking care of your skin, there’s no skincare step as pampering and indulgent as a face mask. Whether you prefer a deep-cleansing clay mask or a sheet mask that leaves your skin glowy and dewy, there’s no better form of #selfcare and TLC than feeding your skin with a skincare mask.

Read on to find out 10 top facts about skincare face masks and you’ll see why masks are always a highlight of professional facial treatments (including ours), and also a great way to D.I.Y a facial in the comfort of your home.

1. Skincare masks have been used for thousands of years.

It is said that Cleopatra, the historically famous Egyptian queen who ruled in the late 4th century B.C used several different skincare masks in her beauty routine including a warm milk and honey concoction to soothe and moisturise and also a clay-lemon juice mixture to brighten and cleanse her skin.

2. Cleansing is an important prep step before masking.

If you’re getting ready to use any kind of skincare mask, you should always cleanse your face thoroughly first. This gets rid of all the dirt and impurities on your skin so that it is ready to soak in the ingredients from your mask. Remember to lather gently, use lukewarm water to rinse your face off, and then gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel.

3. Exfoliate to get the most out of your masking session

When skin cell turnover is slowed down it has a negative impact on the effectiveness of skincare because the thicker dead skin layer prevents absorption of the products and lowers its efficacy. So before masking, exfoliate your skin with a scrub or a facial wash or peel with chemical exfoliants like AHA and topical retinoids.

4. Applying A Toner Will Prepare Your Pores For Sheet Masking

A toner balances your skin’s pH level leaving it neutral and prepared to receive the big boost of nutrients a mask will provide. You can use a cotton pad to apply toner or drip a little toner in your bare hands and pat in on.

5. Masks can help to target specific skin issues

Packed with highly efficacious ingredients to treat the skin, masks can help you zoom in and treat skin problems like acne or visible signs of ageing like dullness, dryness and sagging. There are a plethora of skincare masks out there so pick one that is right for your skin condition.

6. Yes, you can use a skincare mask daily.

If you want to, you can use a skincare mask every day. Some celebs and real women swear by masking daily to keep their complexion in tip top condition. The only exception is if you have severe acne or extremely sensitive skin. In these cases, you may irritate your skin if you use a mask too often so consult a doctor before trying new products if you have these skin conditions.

7. Sheet Masks Are Not Meant To Dry On Your Face

Many people assume that the longer you leave a sheet mask on, the more benefit you can get from it. Either that or you happen to fall asleep with a sheet mask on and wake to find that it has dried up on your face. This is not how you should use a sheet mask. You should always remove a sheet mask while it’s still moist. If you let it dry out and crack on your face, you can actually damage your skin. Around 20 minutes is an ideal length of time to leave a sheet mask on.

8. You Should Not Wash Your Face After Removing A Sheet Mask

Do not wash your face after applying a sheet mask because you will be removing all the skin-loving serum when you do that. Always massage excess serum on your face after removing a sheet mask, and feel free to massage on your neck and décolletage as well.

9. Wash-off cream or clay-based masks are great options too. You can multi-mask with them.

Although sheet masks are a hot favourite these days, do not write off cream or clay-based masks. Sure, they may require a bit more effort as most clay or cream masks need to be washed off after the stipulated amount of time, but they can target skin concerns that sometimes sheet masks cannot. For example, clay masks are great for purifying clogged pores and refining oily or combination skin, and cream masks are ideal for nourishing and comforting drier or mature skin types. There are also gel-based masks that can boost skin’s moisture levels just like a sheet mask does. And a huge plus point of using these masks is that you can multi-mask by applying different kinds of masks on different areas of your face as needed, such as a clay mask on an oily T-zone and a hydrating gel mask on drier skin on the cheeks.

10. Don’t skip your skincare after removing your mask

Whether you have applied a sheet mask or a wash off mask, you should follow up with your usual skincare like eye cream and moisturiser. A moisturiser will help to lock in the skincare goodness imparted by your masking session. And if you are going outdoors in the day, don’t forget your sunscreen.

4 CNY Survival Tips To Keep You Looking & Feeling Amazing

4 CNY Survival Tips To Keep You Looking & Feeling Amazing

You know what they say… “It never hurts to look good.” Yes, it’s the busy time of the year when we meet the most people each day doing the traditional rounds, so you’d want to look your best. We’ve got some tried and tested tips for you. Take notes!

Whether you love it, hate it or have a love-hate relationship with the yearly CNY festivities, there’s no denying that everyone wants to look their best this season. After all, while making multiple pit stops over the Lunar New Year visiting friends and relatives, we meet and greet so many people and everyone is scrubbed up and dressed to impress.

We’re not saying you need to compete with everyone here, but being your best self should be everyone’s goal every single day so here are some failsafe hacks for you to survive CNY while looking terrific.

1. Get your beauty sleep

beauty sleep tips

No matter how tempted you are to stay up late into the night, whether it is to count cash and prep red packets, prepping to cook a feast, or playing Blackjack or mahjong with relatives, make sure you have a cut-off time and head to bed for your dose of beauty rest. Ideally get 8 hours of sleep, which is best for skin regeneration. And of course, remember to remove every trace of makeup before you even go near your bed… no matter how tired you are.

Try: Calvin Chan Cosmeceuticals Cleanse ($50 for 100ml), a refreshing wash that helps to unclog pores, treat blackheads, whiteheads and lift embedded impurities with 4% AHA that gently exfoliates and removes excess oil and dirt from the skin. It also contains Chlorhexidine to inhibit bacterial growth and prevent breakouts.

2. Slather on intensive skincare

skincare tips for CNY visiting

If you haven’t already done your facials, laser treatments and other aesthetic fixes to get your skin in tip-top condition, a skincare mask is your last attempt. Pick one that addresses your main skin concern — a clay mask to detox, a hydrating mask for dry skin, a nourishing mask to stave off signs of ageing, etc — and apply it on cleansed skin before bedtime. Too lazy to remove a mask? Choose a leave on type or apply an extra layer of skincare serum to treat your skin. And next year, plan ahead for your facials and aesthetic treatments.

Try: Calvin Chan Cosmeceuticals Brighten ($80 for 30ml), a vitamin C and hyaluronic acid repair serum that delivers powerful, deep-penetrating moisture to the skin as well as brightens and energises the complexion, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and boosting collagen levels.

3. Use the right makeup

longwear lasting makeup CNY survival guide

Two words — Longwear. Makeup. Don’t leave home without it. From foundation (longwear foundation isn’t just for oily skin, there are different formulas for different skin types. Just head to Sephora to search for your match), to lipstick and eye makeup, specially formulated longwear types are your best bet to keep your face looking flawless all day while visiting. Of course, this doesn’t mean you don’t need to touch up your makeup (there’s no telling what scrumptious, oily food will be served to you during visiting) so always pack the essentials in your purse for touch ups on the go — Foundation, lippie, tissues for blotting, maybe a vial of perfume too to freshen your scent?

Try: A facial program that is customised to your needs. Regular maintenance will ensure that skin concerns do not get out of hand and develop into problems later on. Check out Calvin Chan Aesthetics suite of facials to address concerns from acne to signs of ageing.

4. Dress comfortably

CNY survival hacks

Yes, you want to look amazing but squeezing yourself into anything too tight or uncomfortable will not do you any favours, even if it is a gorgeous, figure-hugging cheongsam or a skin-tight Herve Leger dress. Make sure your outfit has some room for you to breath, sit, eat and move around. Nothing too short either and if it makes you feel self conscious before you even leave your house, then switch it for something more forgiving. Pick a shift dress in a bright, happy print or colour, or an elegant midi dress. Remember, you’re going to be wearing that outfit all day long so if you feel at ease, you’ll be much happier.

Try: An EMSCULPT program. EMSCULPT is  a body sculpting machine that uses electromagnetic energy to cause deep muscle contractions. The treatment eliminates fat cells (up to 19 percent loss after four treatments) and simultaneously builds muscle fibers (by roughly 16 percent) for more a defined body. EMSCULPT can treat the abs, butt, biceps, triceps, thighs and calves.

The Travel Beauty & Skincare Tips Everyone Needs To Know
Dec 3, 2019

The Travel Beauty & Skincare Tips Everyone Needs To Know

Keep airplane acne, travel breakouts and skin irritation at bay. Here’s how you can look great in all your holiday photos and feel amazing with clear skin.

It’s the time of the year where everyone is flying off to some destination or another, fulfilling their year-long wanderlust and of course, taking lots of impressive photos for the ‘gram.

Unfortunately, traveling can do a number on your skin. Partly owing to the fact that you’ve forsaken your good old regular skincare products for random travel-sized toiletries you found in your cabinet, and partly because of the stress your skin has been through on the journey.

What Causes Travel Breakouts?

travel breakouts zits pimples

We’ve all been there. Your skin is perfectly fine and dandy pre-takeoff but when you arrive at your destination, everything becomes haywire. Your T-zone is oilier than usual, areas of skin that usually are normal and balanced, like the cheeks, feel dry and sandpapery, and lips become horribly chapped. All these problems point to one culprit: parched aeroplane air.

Air pressure is not the only thing that goes haphazard in the course of a flight, the humidity levels on a plane can plummet to 80 percent lower than normal levels. What this means for your skin? If your skin type is normal to dry it becomes almost desiccated and dehydrated. If it is oily, expect oil production to be ramped up to oil slick levels.

So, what can you do about it?

Pre-Trip Scrub Off

prevent clogged pores

Another chief cause of breakouts is dead skin, which clogs up pores and causes congestion, so a good preventative step is exfoliation.

The best way to do it is with an alpha hydroxy acid, in the form of a facial wash or an at-home peel, that will help to remove the dry, dead layer of skin on the surface and help to clear congestion in your pores.

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration — From The Inside and Outside

hydration to prevent breakouts

Dryness is the biggest offender that causes skin to breakout or peel. In areas that are dry with less active sebum glands, skin becomes so dry it tends to peel or feel really rough and look dull. And on the other hand, when sebum-active skin starts to get drier, it activates more oil production in a bid to rehydrate itself. Often this is overcompensation and skin gets super oily leading to a breakout. This is because when excess oil mixes with dirt and bacteria, it makes skin a breeding ground for zits and acne.

Remedy the sitch by drinking plenty of plain water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Forego the alcohol from the beverage cart (if you can resist) as drinking alcohol causes your body to dehydrate even more.

Before you leave for the airport (and after the exfoliation we recommended in the earlier point), meticulously layer on the hydration with a hydrating softener and serum, followed by a good dose of moisturising emulsion and a light layer of richer cream to seal it all in. Pst… This skincare routine also helps to protect skin from external aggressors like pollution and germs, which, as you know, the plane is full of, being an enclosed space with hundreds of other people.

Essential Sun Protection

SPF sun protection skincare tips

This should go without saying but you’ll definitely want to follow up your exfoliation and moisturisation skincare sesh with SPF. Even if you’re not flying you need a good slathering of sunscreen.

And you do know that UV rays are much more intense at higher altitudes, don’t you? What’s more, with the thinner air up there, the sun’s harmful radiation reaches your skin much faster too. So keep those window shutters closed and for the times the air crew require them open for safety reasons during take-off and landing, a good layer of sunscreen will save your face.

Skip The Makeup If You Can

detox skin after travel

Once your freshly exfoliated face is moisturised and protected from UV radiation, it is best to stop there, i.e. Do not apply makeup…. If you can. Just like you don’t sleep in your makeup, leaving makeup on your face during long periods of travel can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

But if you must makeup, keep it as simple as possible with a tinted moisturiser or a lightweight BB cream and clean it off thoroughly as soon as you reach your hotel or airbnb. A session of detox with a deep cleansing mask won’t hurt either post-flight.

Calm Body, Calm Mind, Calm Skin

calm skin travel skincare beauty tips

Keep stress in check as anxiety, lack of sleep and elevated stress levels can knock your skin off balance too. Get enough rest on holiday, as much as you want to see it all and do it all. And don’t forget about jet-lag and the impact it can cause on your body. Pop a melatonin pill and get more rest when you first reach a destination before you kick it into high gear with all the sight-seeing, shopping and experiences.

Some helpful aids you might want to pack on your trip (besides all the skincare mentioned above and melantonin pills) — a relaxing lavender scented candle, an eye shade for napping, lip balm to keep puckers smooth and hydrated, and probiotic pilld to keep your digestive track healthy and balanced during your trip.

Our complete guide to acne care: How to identify and treat different kinds of pimples
Nov 20, 2019

Our complete guide to acne care: How to identify and treat different kinds of pimples

There are 7 different types of acne! And the best way to get rid of acne for good is to arm yourself with knowledge and the right treatments.

Everyone complains and laments whenever they get a pimple and of course, many try to take matters into their own hands, usually either using foundation and concealer to hide the offending spot, or (horror!) popping and squeezing it out by themselves.

But everyone knows these methods are far from ideal, smearing makeup on may cause the acne bacteria to be trapped in the skin leading to a worse breakout, and popping zits yourself is often very unsanitary and may cause the situation to deteriorate fast into infection.

Before you do anything about a pimple, or even if you don’t have one at this moment, read this pimple guide. First up… know that there are different types of pimples and that each kind requires a specific action plan. Here’s how to identify and treat the kind of zit you have whether it is blackheads, whiteheads, cystic zits or blind pimples.

1. Hormonal Acne

treating hormonal acne

What it looks like: Scattered zits around your chin and jawline.

The cause: If you have this kind of acne, you’ll notice that it hits regularly, usually coinciding with your period. No surprise because it is caused by fluctuating hormones that rev up sebum production and the excess oil gather in pores, breeding bacteria that eventually leads to the outbreak.

What to do about it: Always have salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide skincare products on hand and a few days before your period, pop them into your skincare routine to prevent hormonal acne from happening in the first place. For salicylic acid try a facial wash or scrub and benzoyl peroxide can easily be found in spot treatments. If hormonal breakouts are still a problem, a facial that focuses on acne treatment can help to get rid of acne-causing bacteria, clear clogged pores and slough away dead skin.

2. Papules

Papules pimples treatment

What it looks like: A splattering of small, red, painful zits.

The cause: This is a type of inflammatory acne caused mainly by bacteria called p. acnes on the skin. P. acnes gives rise to skin inflammation and red, sometimes itchy bumps that don’t come to a head.

What to do about it: Get acquainted with the ingredient benzoyl peroxide, which is known to eliminate acne-causing bacteria and calm inflammation. Gentle exfoliation with a low dose of AHA or BHA can be beneficial too. Benzoyl peroxide can be very drying for the skin so hydrate well with a suitable moisturiser.

3. Cystic Acne

cystic acne

What it looks like: A smattering of huge, inflamed pimples. The biggest, reddest, most painful breakout around.

The cause: Genetics is the root cause of cystic pimples and it is worsened by an over stimulation of oil glands. This is the trickiest kind of acne to treat and often recurs in the same spot.

What to do about it: Skincare is not likely to work for this kind of acne, unfortunately. You should see a doctor for cortisone injections or oral medication like an antibiotic to use in conjunction with prescription topical formulas like Epiduo Forte Gel, which is effective at controlling severe acne without the help of oral treatments.

4. Whiteheads

whiteheads

What it looks like: A pimple with a white dot in the middle.

The cause: Whiteheads are often directly related to clogged pores resulting from a buildup of dead skin cells. The white dot you see at the top of a whitehead is in fact the tip of the clog and beneath it is a mix of oil, dirt and bacteria, causing inflammation and the angry bump under it.

What to do about it: This is another case for salicylic acid, which helps to remove excess oil and exfoliate dead cells and keep pores clear. Remember to hydrate skin with a lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturiser though, to keep dryness at bay as salicylic acid can halt sebum production.

5. Blackheads

blackheads removal

What it looks like: Non inflamed, dark, tiny dots that cover each pore.

The cause: Like whiteheads, blackheads are blocked pores. The difference is the colour as blackheads have a larger opening at the surface compared to whiteheads so air enters and oxidizes the oil nestled in the pore, turning it dark or black.

What to do about it: Blackhead sufferers must exfoliate frequently. Pore strips might help to yank out the blackheads but do use a salicylic acid product to shrink and keep pores clear.

6. Blind Pimples

blind pimples

What it looks like: An isolated, painful, slightly raised bump under the skin without a head. The cause: These kind of pimples are more felt than seen. Some are barely visible and may not look that red but boy, do they hurt. This is because blind pimples fester under the skin but do not have an outlet, so the inflammation burgeons under the skin and makes it painful to the touch. What to do about it: Hands off blind pimples (and any kind of pimple, actually). Picking, poking, scratching or squeezing adds fuel to the fire, or rather, germs to the infection. The good news is that blind pimples may resolve on their own after a few days. If it doesn’t go away in a week, see your facial therapist for a professional zit extraction.

7. Pustules

pustules pimples

What it looks like: Fiery zits with white or yellow pus inside that may look similar to whiteheads.

The cause: Although this type of acne resembles whiteheads, they are caused by bacterial inflammation rather than clogged pores.

What to do about it: Reach for the benzoyl peroxide spot treatment, which can help to reduce the bacteria and hence the inflammation. Do not pop an inflamed zit as these can likely leave a scar. Head to your facialist to get them professionally extracted and to calm any inflammation.
